Nonlinear Stress-Strain Formulation for Soils

Abstract
The basic principles of hypoelasticity are used to develop an incremental theory that is capable of describing the nonlinear stress-strain behavior of soils when compacted to different densities and loaded along various axisymmetric stress paths. Specific relationships are determined from experimental data for two types of soils. The results indicate that the modulus and Poisson's ratio may either increase or decrease, depending on the ratio of the principal stress increments. A computer analysis of a buried reinforced concrete pipe is compared with actual experimental measurements to illustrate application of the method.
