An attempt to condition the pupillary response.

Abstract
An attempt was made to condition the change in size of the pupil in response to changes in the intensity of light to a tone of 1024 cycles or the sound of a buzzer. The UCS was a change in light intensity from 3.5 to 20 foot candles. In each trial, the CS (tone or buzzer) lasted for 19 secs. during the last 10 of which the light (UCS) was set at a new level of intensity (either 3.5 or 20 foot candles depending upon whether dilation or constriction was being conditioned). No conditioning was obtained although 11 subjects were used and the number of trials per subject ranged from 48-264. A group of 8 control subjects underwent the same treatment except that no CS was present. The results showed that many pupillary changes which appeared with the first group of 11 subjects were not due to the combined presentation of tone and light, but were merely spontaneous changes in pupil size.
