Abstract
This report presents a literature review concerning the behavior of carotenoid pigments in human metabolism and their distribution in human atheromas. It also describes a clinical study of a 77 year-old Negro man with massive subcutaneous xanthomas secondary to diabetes. Four xanthomas were removed from the left elbow, after which carotene dietary supplements were given for 5 weeks. Blood carotenoid levels increased 6-fold. Six xanthomas were next removed from the right elbow and these contained significantly more carotenoids than xanthomas previously removed from the left elbow. Keywords
