Abstract
The rare earth elements that make Bayan Obo the world's largest rare earth deposit are contained mostly in fluorocarbonate and phosphate minerals in apparently metasomatized sedimentary strata. The paper describes less well known rare earth silicate- and silicophosphate-bearing metasomatites near the contact of a Permian (Hercynian) granitoid intrusive at the eastern end of the ore field. Ontoyev believes the occurrence of these supports the hypothesis of mineralization by Hercynian magmatogenic fluids for the origin of the entire Bayan Obo deposit. Keywords
