Abstract
A projection theorem is obtained for the class of far-field patterns of the acoustic transmission problem corresponding to time-harmonic incident plane waves propagating in arbitrary directions. This projection theorem depends on the eigenvalues of a new class of boundary-problems associated with the transmission problem. Using this projection theorem and the theory of Herglotz wave functions, we derive two distinct optimization schemes for solving the inverse transmission problem. Numerical examples are then given showing the practicality of the second of these two methods for solving the inverse transmission problem.
