Abstract
Unilateral myectomies of pectineus muscles were performed in 18 normal dogs of mixed sexes when they were 2 mo. old. The contralateral muscles were removed when the dogs were 12 mo. old. The total, as well as the numbers, of different histochemical fiber types contained in each pectineus muscle was determined by indirect fiber counting method at the 2 ages. The results obtained were statistically analyzed to determine whether the differences between the numbers of fibers at 2 mo. and 12 mo. of age were statistically significant. The total numbers of fibers in all muscles decreased very significantly (by about 32%) in both sexes between 2 and 12 mo. of age. The decrease resulted from loss of about 20% of Type I, 39% of Type II and 73% of the intermediate muscle fibers. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
