Abstract
A method is described for the rapid and simple preparation of acetoacetic acid in its salt form. The preparation is based on the saponification of ethyl acetoacetate or on the alkaline hydrol sis of acetoace-tamide. The most successful results, in terms of purity and yield, are achieved using ethyl acetoacetate and 5N NaOH as the saponification medium and incubating for 12 hr at 4 °C with no pH adjustment. Keywords
