Abstract
Of 58 patients with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT), hypersideremia occurred in 17. Stainable iron was present in the liver specimens of 16 in 20. Iron concentration was slightly increased in five biopsy specimens and markedly in one. Packed red blood cell phlebotomies resulted in remissions in all of six patients. Repletion of iron stores by administering iron to two patients in phlebotomy-induced remissions resulted in biochemical relapses six and nine months later; whereas remissions were sustained for at least one year in 24 other patients. Keywords
