The Faint Object Spectrograph for the 2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope

Abstract
The Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) is a highly efficient fixed format spectrograph for the 2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope. It uses a CCD detector for low resolution (15–20 Å fwhm) spectrophotometry over the spectral range 4000–10 500 Å. The overall efficiency, including atmosphere and telescope absorption is greater than 11 per cent at 7000 Å and a zenith distance of 27.5°. An outline of the mechanical and electronic arrangement of FOS is given, together with a discussion of its modes of operation and facilities. Data reduction software which has been written specifically for FOS is described. Commissioning tests on the spectrograph have been carried out during 1984 and 1985 and the performance of the instrument is assessed.
