Abstract
The activity of some [rat] intestinal enzymes were studied after 2 kR irradiation. Brush border enzymes, maltase and leucineaminopeptidase (LAP) increased 20 h after irradiation, while after 72 h their activities were reduced to very low lwvels. Lysosomal enzymes showed a completely different behavior: acid phosphatase activity increased only 72 h after irradiation, whereas .beta.-glucuronidase increased significantly after 20 h and reaches values 2-3 times higher than controls after 72 h. The histologic picture at the 1st interval after irradiation showed gross alterations in the crypt region, but the villi appeared nearly normal. At 72 h after irradiation the whole epithelium was affected and very numberous leukocytes were present in the stroma.
