The strength of the concrete in composite reinforced concrete beams in hogging bending

Abstract
Synopsis The concrete in the compression Zone of a composite reinforced concrete beam loaded in hogging bending is subjected to a complex multi-axial stress system which enables it to withstand much higher longitudinal stresses and strains than is possible in normal reinforced concrete. This paper attempts to assess the ultimate average compressive stresses attained in such beams, the results indicating stresses of the order of three times those in normal reinforced concrete. Hypotheses explaining the confining forces are suggested.
