Abstract
Volvulus of the entire small bowel about its mesentery without predisposing anatomical defects is rare in the Western world but more common in less developed countries. Two cases are described, the aetiology is discussed, and a valuable diagnostic sign is highlighted. It is suggested that the high mortality is avoidable by prompt diagnosis and early surgery. Keywords
