Status of HI searches for CHVCs beyond the Local Group
Abstract
Growing evidence supports the suggestion that the compact high-velocity clouds of HI (CHVCs) are located throughout the Local Group and continue to fuel galactic evolution. If gaseous objects characterised by the FWHM diameter of 10 kpc and HI mass of 1x10^7 M_Sun that follow for the Local Group sample of CHVCs also populate other galaxy groups, then it is natural to ask if these would not already have been seen by current blind HI surveys of the extragalactic sky. We consider the properties of the deepest published surveys of this type, in particular the Arecibo HI Strip Survey (AHISS), and conclude that the sensitivity and coverage are not yet sufficient to expect detection of CHVC analogues. Keywords
