Family Members As Case Managers: Partnership Between the Formal and Informal Support Networks

Abstract
Elderly persons (mean age = 83) were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 81) in which family members (mean age = 62) participated in a case management training program, or to a control group (n = 76). Following training, family members in the experimental group performed a significantly greater number of case management tasks on behalf of their elderly relatives than family members in the control group. Further, the duration of service was significantly shorter for elderly persons in the experimental group.
