Beiträge zur Frage der humoralen Regulation der Thrombopoese

Abstract
In the plasma of thrombopenic new born infants after exchange transfusion, a humoral factor, thrombopoietin, was demonstrated which causes thrombocytosis in the mouse. After repeated exchange transfusions, the thrombopoietin content rises. Plasma from a newborn infant who had this operation carried out 6 times caused an exceptionally severe thrombocytosis. Plasma obtained 3 days after transfusion caused a more marked thrombocytosis than plasma taken immediately. The authors believe that blood left over from exchange transfusions, in view of the quantities and the high thrombopoetin content, might be successfully used in treating certain thrombopenic conditions.
