PATHOLOGY OF PETROSITIS: REPORT OF THREE CASES

Abstract
Perhaps the subject of petrositis or apicitis is of historical interest only; however, the otologist's interest in the pyramids of the petrous bones is not yet to be relegated to the past. Tragedies of meningitis and cerebral abscess are still to be the otologist's problem, and petrositis is going to be the ally of these serious complications. In the past few months 2 cases of meningitis which were apparently due to petrositis have come under my study. Although the temporal bones have not yet been sectioned, there is every evidence clinically and on gross pathologic examination that they contained the nidus of infection from which meningitis resulted as a complication. Both of the patients, it may be observed, received massive doses of the sulfonamide drugs.
