Effective Mass and Color Change

Abstract
The cuprate superconductors exhibit a number of anomalies that distinguish them from conventional metals and superconductors. In their Perspective, Klein and Blumberg discuss results reported in the same issue by Basov et al. in which optical measurements are used to examine the behavior of electrons in cuprates. With an equation called a sum rule, physicists can analyze the different contributions to the superconductor9s absorption of light. Among the findings that Basov et al. present is the result that the cuprates violate an obey a fundamental sum rule in a novel way.
