Abstract
The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to determine the oxidation characteristics of ZrC, both as a monocarbide and in combination with free carbon. The oxidation tests conducted were twofold: a static test run in still air and a dynamic test using a high-velocity air blast. It was found that the oxidation behavior of single-phased ZrC and ZrC + C is a function of the C concentration. At lower temperatures, increasing the C content decreases the resistance to oxidation. It was also discovered that adding alloying elements had little effect on either the static or the dynamic oxidation behaviors. Keywords
