Abstract
During the last decade, the prevalence of hysterectomy has increased in various countries, e.g. in The Netherlands the increase is 46%. One of the reasons for this increase is the current lower risk of surgery, thus allowing broader indications for operation. A detailed survey of indications for simple hysterectomy is presented and morbidity and mortality percentages are discussed. Furthermore, extreme differences in prevalence of hysterectomy between various countries are considered. It is suggested that when the indications and implications of hysterectomy are evaluated, possible negative psychological effects of surgery should also be considered. Keywords
