Mispronunciation Detection

Abstract
In mispronunciation detection, listeners' sensitivity to deviations in the speech signal is measured. Subjects are asked to press a button as soon as they hear a mispronounced word in lists or sentences. The mispronounced words are created by replacing a phoneme in the original words by inappropriate phonemes. Reaction times and miss rates indicate the effects of position of the deviation in the word, the size of the phonemic deviation, lexical stress or accent, sentence context and integration. The task is easy to use, even with children, but has also been criticised on a number of grounds.
