Abstract
Summary The effects of ethephon application on changes in quality attributes of Discovery apples during simulated marketing periods of up to 12 d were investigated. Ethephon advanced maturity by up to 7 d and resulted in reduced firmness, lower titratable acidity and a more yellow background colour compared with untreated fruit harvested at the same time. Increased ethephon concentrations and longer delays between application and harvest enhanced these effects. However, the rates at which firmness and acidity declined and yellowing increased during simulated marketing periods were similar in both ethephon-treated and untreated fruit and it was shown that the apparent reduction in the shelf-life of ethephon-treated Discovery can be attributed entirely to the effects of ethephon in inducing earlier ripening. This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
