Abstract
An account is given of an experiment in which the thickness of the 'saturated' helium film formed from the vapour on a stainless steel mirror was compared with the thickness of the film formed from the liquid phase. The thickness of the film formed from the vapour was almost the same above and below the λ-point and of the same thickness as the helium I film formed when the mirror was in contact with the liquid. The thickness of the helium II film, with the mirror in contact with the liquid, was much thicker because of the more stringent isothermal conditions prevailing on the mirror surface. Keywords
