Abstract
Tentative structures are derived for eight water‐soluble cardenolide glycosides from the root bark of Streblus asper LOUR. They are mainly based on identification by paper and thin layer chromatography of the products obtained after acid hydrolysis in micro scale, using both ‘KILIANI’ and ‘MANNICH’ conditions. In derivatives containing D‐glucose as β‐D‐glucopyranosidic end group this sugar could be split off by prolonged treatment with snail enzyme. In a few cases it was possible to perform hydrolysis in preparative scale and to show that the isolated sugar component belonged to the D‐series. Strophalloside (J) could be reduced to strophanolloside (K) with NaBH4.
