Abstract
A revised classification is proposed for the species of Simulium s.l. occurring in the Australasian Region excluding the Polynesian islands. Keys are provided to the subgenera and species-groups recognized, and a full diagnosis is given for each segregate. About four-fifths of the species from the area are assigned to the subgenus Morops Enderlein, a group found to be confined to Australasia; the remainder (excepting one species of Hebridosimulium) are assigned to the primarily Indo-Malayan subgenus Gomphostilbia Enderlein and the cosmopolitan subgenus Eusimulium Roubaud. Hebridosimulium Grenier and Rageau is treated as a subgenus (new status), and a lectotype is designated for the type-species of Gomphostilbia. A summary of the proposed classification is given that includes a check-list of the 54 named species in the area. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
