Abstract
Thirty-four spp. of small spores, distr. among 12 genera, are listed from the Mystic coal (Desmoinesian) of s. Iowa. Laevigato-sporites globosus, Lycospora rugosa. and VESICASPORA wilsonii are descr. The genus Vesicaspora is proposed to include typical bladdered grains of presumed gymnospermic affinity. Statistical studies indicate that the Mystic coal splits northwestward, in Iowa, into 2 coal beds at the uppermost of 2 persistent clay partings which separate the coal into 3 benches in s.-e. Iowa. The small spore assemblage is characterized and compared from 4 different localities in Iowa and compared to Illinois small spore assemblages of similar age.
