Abstract
Articular cartilage explants [rabbit] were incubated at various O2 tensions and the results of 35SO4 and 3H-thymidine incorporation indicate that proteoglycan and DNA synthesis is depressed at low O2 tensions. The studies of O2 consumption and glucose/lactate metabolism in the cartilage suggest a shift in energy pathways as the O2 environment is altered. In low O2 tensions chondrocytes follow anaerobic glycolysis; at physiologic O2 tensions chondrocytes follow a combination of aerobic and glycolytic metabolism. The data suggest that hypoxia, frequently found in inflammatory arthritides, has deleterious effects on chondrocyte metabolism and significantly impairs any reparative potential of the injured chondrocytes. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
