Simple models of correlation in atoms

Abstract

Correlation splitting calculations for the three terms of the 2p² configuration are carried out and used to investigate the term intervals and the term dependence of the radial expectation value <r ^-1>. A simple variational calculation for 1s²2p² shows that external screening is not entirely negligible, but insignificantly affects the term dependence of <r ^-1> for the 2p orbital. A calculation for 4f² is carried out and used to give a rough estimate of the term dependence of rare earth 4f radial orbitals.
