Abstract
Correlation splitting calculations for the three terms of the 2p2 configuration are carried out and used to investigate the term intervals and the term dependence of the radial expectation value <r -1>. A simple variational calculation for 1s22p2 shows that external screening is not entirely negligible, but insignificantly affects the term dependence of <r -1> for the 2p orbital. A calculation for 4f2 is carried out and used to give a rough estimate of the term dependence of rare earth 4f radial orbitals. Keywords
