Abstract
During recovery from CO2 or nitrogen anesthesia, 2-methyl- and 2-ethyl-para hydroquinone (paraquinone) were secreted by adult confused flour beetles, Tribolium confusum Jacquelin duVal. These compounds accumulated to autotoxic levels in enclosed respiro-metric flasks when ventilation airflow rates were low. The importance of considering these defensive secretions in toxicological evaluations is discussed.
