We show that pion-nucleus total cross sections are sensitive to the assumed off-shell behavior of the pion-nucleon amplitude. Dependence on energy and nucleon number is discussed, as in an energy-dependent effective nuclear radius arising from the -wave pion-nucleon interaction.
