A Correction to the Sverdrup Transport

Abstract
The transport in the western boundary layer in Stommel's model of the ocean circulation with a constant frictional coefficient over the entire basin is calculated exactly and is found to be significantly less than the Sverdrup transport for aspect ratios [meridional width (L)/latitudinal width (M)] characteristic of the World Ocean basins. The reduction factor is approximately (1/ϵα2)(1 − e− ϵα2), where α = πL/M and Lϵ is the boundary-layer thickness.
