Movements of Elephants in Luangwa Valley, Zambia

Abstract
A 14-mo. study involving immobilization and marking of African elephants (Loxodonta africana) to learn their subsequent movements was undertaken in July 1967 in Luangwa Valley in E Zambia. Male elephants (34) were marked conspicuously to enable identification of individuals when they were sighted. A total of 187 sightings of 27 of the marked bull elephants was achieved. Seasonal and other shorter movements are discussed. A map of movements made from sightings indicated the sedentary nature of bulls during the dry season and the wide dispersal beginning with the rains. Individual elephants moved up to 5 km between sightings. All but 1 stayed within 3 km of permanent water.
