Campers' Perceptions of Site Deterioration and Crowding

Abstract
Can campers' opinions and observations about a site serve as a workable monitor for carrying capacity? Interviews with 405 campers in two Indiana state parks indicated that few were sensitive to either resource deterioration or crowding. This result suggests that managers cannot rely on camper opinions as indicators for monitoring environmental impacts. Campers expressed support for site alterations and closures to remedy deterioration problems.
