Effect of Fasting, Gestation, Lactation and Exercise on Glucose Turnover in Horses

Abstract
The effects of fasting, gestation, lactation and exercise conditioning on the rate of irreversible loss and total entry rate of glucose in the horse was determined by the single injection technique. Plasma glucose concentration was unaffected by exercise, gestation or lactation when compared with the control group (102±5 mg/100 ml), whereas a 72-hr. fast reduced the concentration to 81±4 mg/100 ml. Exercise conditioning and lactation resulted in almost a two-fold increase, and fasting caused a two-fold decrease in irreversible loss when compared with the control group (1.34±.24 mg/min. kg body wt.).
