Abstract
The variety of lasers which have been described in the scientific literature is extensive. Laser action has been recorded in every state of matter (from semiconductor diodes to quinine water!) and the laser spectrum extends from the vacuum ultraviolet to the far infrared, in a range of wavelengths which for some devices may be sufficiently stable and well defined to form wavelength or frequency standards, and yet in others may be widely tunable. Keywords
