Effect of Immobilization on Oxygen Uptake of Skeletal Muscle.

Abstract
In rats following tenotomy of the gastrocnemius muscle the cytochrome oxidase activity of homogenates prepd. from this tissue decreases progressively with time. Contralateral normal muscles of each animal served as control. The results obtained show a qualitative as well as a quantitative similarity to the results obtained in a previous study (Am. J. Physiol. 170,371,1952) in which immobilization of the gastrocnemius was produced by neurotomy. The Qo2 of the denervated hemidiaphragm decreases progressively and significantly with time, although this muscle is subjected to constant passive movement during the process of breathing, suggesting that this type of excercise is not able to prevent metabolic changes resulting from the denervation of this muscle.
