URINARY 17-KETOSTEROIDS IN CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE*

Abstract
The daily urinary excretion of total neutral 17-ketosteroids is considerably lower in patients with chronic liver disease than in normal subjects. The proportion excreted in the free state is increased considerably. The calculated recovery, as urinary 17-ketosteroid, of 200 mg. testosterone propionate, administered in a single injn., was 128 to 59.6% in normal subjects and 9.5 to 40.9% in those with chronic liver disease. The proportion recovered in the free state was higher in the latter group. These data suggest that the capacity of the organism (presumably of the liver) for conjugation of metabolites of testosterone is impaired in subjects with chronic liver disease.
