THE PROPERTIES OF FORMALDEHYDE-RESISTANT CORYNEBACTERIUM DIPHTHERIAE

Abstract
By transferring every 48 hrs. to medium containing increasing amts. of formal-dehyde, a culture of C. diphtheriae. Pars-Williams no. 8, was made resistant to up to 0.2%. Once resistant, cultures could be main-tained for at least 35 passages without formaldehyde. The resist-ant strain differed from the original in that it showed filamentous forms, was Gram-negative, grew in rough colonies, and fermented sucrose. No differences were observed in virulence or toxin production.
