Abstract
The conditions existing in a Bayard-Alpert gauge and the effect of varying these conditions are reviewed. It is shown that several accounts of nonlinearity in gauge operation are due to variation in these conditions during the test and not to any intrinsic nonlinearity in the gauge itself. Furthermore, it is shown that if pumping effects and conductances are taken into account, good agreement is obtained between pressure measurements made in different regions of a system containing a single gas type with gauges operating at various emission currents. In addition, it is shown that many problems are substantially reduced by the simple expedient of operating the gauge at reduced electron emission and filament temperature. Keywords
