Abstract
Estimates of the life span of the erythrocytes of three sheep were made using methylene-labeled C14 glycine. The results obtained showed life spans of 131, 157, and 150 days which exceeded by approximately threefold previous estimates in which indirect techniques were used. The effect of the magnitude of erythrocyte life span on iron metabolism studies involving estimation of “physiological iron requirement” for maintenance is discussed. Keywords
