Abstract
The use of sulfanilamide as a chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of acute infections of the ear is being acclaimed by groups everywhere.1The reports of successful treatment in cases of hemolytic streptococcic septicemia and of meningitis are increasing at a rapid rate. The drug now has an established place in the therapy of these complications. The evaluation of sulfanilamide therapy in all cases of otitis media or mastoiditis requires an enormous amount of clinical application. Several questions have arisen since the drug was introduced. Should every patient who has acute otitis media receive sulfanilamide? Is there less need for surgical intervention in cases of acute mastoiditis? What is the clinical course of a patient receiving the drug? This study includes reports on 21 patients with acute otitis media or acute mastoiditis treated in the Babies Hospital from December 1937 to April 1938 and on 1 patient treated in theKeywords
