Abstract
In this 3rd paper of the series, the authors bring forward experimental evidence to show that no anomalies are exhibited when the rH indicators are injected into Amoeba proteus. Like the egg-cells, these organisms reduce all the indicators up to a certain point on the scale, and none above. The amoeba is capable of oxidizing the leuco-form of indicators of lower oxidation-reduction potential than its own, just as it reduces indicators of higher oxidation-reduction potential. Experiments with an apparatus permitting micro-injection in atmospheres of H2 and O2 showed that the amoeba was widely independent of the concentration of O2 in the surrounding atmosphere as regards its rH. Nyctotherus cordiformis, an anaerobic protozoon living in the frog''s intestine, was also investigated. Its pH is 7.1 whether the conditions under which it is living are aerobic or anaerobic, but its internal rH, though 19-20 in the former case, was as low as 9.5-10.5 in the latter.
