Abstract
Investigations with perfusions of isolated rabbit liver have shown that metampicillin is excreted by the liver at a high rate: bile recovery is 46·5% of the administered dose. Hepatic uptake of metampicillin seems to be early and pronounced. In man, the biliary elimination of this antibiotic varies according to the route of administration. Only moderate biliary levels were obtained after oral administration of metampicillin, while extremely high biliary concentrations were reached when the intravenous route was used. When administered parenterally, metampicillin appears to be particularly suitable for the treatment of biliary tract infections. Keywords
