Abstract
The author, who has devoted many years to study of the environment, especially water chemistry, of arid regions, examines interrelationships in the Aral ecosystem. The latter have been impaired by the falling sea level and must be taken into account in the course of its rehabilitation. He makes some specific recommendations for optimizing environmental and public health conditions in the Aral basin. Implications for locations upstream in the Aral basin if the Aral no longer serves as a regional salt receptacle are explored in a concluding section.
