Abstract
The polarization of nucleons elastically scattered from nuclei is discussed on the optical model. Analytical formulae are used to illustrate the differences between various approximations. A uniform spin-orbit potential is shown to be at variance with experiment, unless the magnitude varies with the nuclear radius, and it is shown that the polarization may change sign at an energy close to that for which the total cross section is a maximum. Keywords
