Abstract
The [beta]-carboxylation of phosphoenolpyruvate to yield oxaloacetate and inorganic phosphate was catalyzed by cell-free extracts of Crassulacean plants. The phosphoenolpyruvic carboxylase and malic dehydrogenase in these extracts were linked to bring about malate synthesis. The conditions under which the extracts bring about the catalysis of the linked reaction were studied and the effect of substrate concentration determined. Some aspects of the linked reaction and of the other reactions which bring about the conversion of phosphoenolpyruvate into malate are considered in relation to the increase in acidity in the dark in Crassulacean plants. Keywords
