SHORT RANGE ORDER IN Cu-Mh ALLOYS

Abstract
Neutron diffraction studies on both poly‐ and single‐crystalline specimens of Cu‐Mn alloys in the α solid solution range have been carried out. A short range atomic order having the symmetry of the M = 1 type long period structure is found to develop in these alloys. Diffuse scattering peaks are found which are due primarily to this short range atomic ordering. The formation of the short range atomic order is responsible for the sensitive change in magnetic properties of these alloys upon heat treatment.
