Abstract
Treatment of focal dystonias by local injections of Botulinum Toxin A (BOTOX) has rapidly become widespread during the last few years. Meanwhile, a broad experience is available in dystonias of the craniocervical regions and of the extremities. The present paper deals with indications, methods, results and side effects of local BOTOX injections in the light of recent literature and our own experiences. Although there are open questions as to the long-term effects of repeated applications, BOTOX injections can be regarded, according to present knowledge, as an effective and safe treatment of focal dystonias.
