EFFECT OF TESTOSTERONE PROPIONATE ON SEMINAL VESICLES OF JUVENILE AND CASTRATE MALERATS

Abstract
In 20 to 22 day old rats doses of testosterone propionate 0.25 and 1.00 mg. produced a greater effect on seminal vesicle wts. after 72 hrs. than after 48 hrs. and the responses to 0.10, 0.25 and 1.00 mg. differed more significantly after the longer time interval. In normal rats the seminal vesicles showed little growth before 32 days, after which the rate of growth was accelerated. Rats castrated at 50 days were unsuitable for androgen assay because of slow regression of seminal vesicles and inconstant seminal vesicle response to testosterone propionate at different intervals after castration. The seminal vesicles of rats castrated at 27-31 days respond in the same manner to a 1.0 mg. dose of testosterone propionate at any time from 7-350 days after castration. The maximum effect on seminal vesicle growth in castrate rats was obtained 72 hrs. after injn. with single doses of 0.1, 0.25 and 0.50 mg. of testosterone propionate. With a 1.00 mgm. dose the maximum effect was obtained in 96 hrs. At 72 hrs. after injn. the differences in seminal vesicle response in castrate rats to doses of testosterone propionate ranging from 0.10-1.00 mg. were more significant than at 48, 96 or 120 hrs.
