Abstract
The Kariba Gorge hydro-electric scheme now under construction by the Federal Power Board of Rhodesia and Nyasaland will provide the power for a major increase in electrification in the Federation. Outputs of 1200 MW and 8000 GWh per annum or more can be generated, and a 330 kV system is being built to transmit the power to the consuming centres over distances of above 300 miles. The paper outlines the conditions governing the design of the system, describes the steps taken to select the system voltage and other main features, and discusses some of the factors affecting the characteristics and design of the equipment.Keywords
