Abstract
Anatomical measurements were made to determine the length of the airway to the bifurcation of the trachea. These were correlated with an easily obtained external body measurement[long dash]the distance between the upper border of the cricoid cartilage and the tip of the xiphoid process; the relation was found to be statistically significant. Two suggestions are given for selecting endotracheal tubes of maximum safe length in adults: Nasotracheal tube[long dash]use the distance measured along the body surface between the upper border of the cricoid cartilage and the tip of the xiphoid process. Orotracheal tube[long dash]subtract 2 cm. from this distance. Keywords
