The Length of the Airway to the Bifurcation of the Trachea

Abstract
Anatomical measurements were made to determine the length of the airway to the bifurcation of the trachea. These were correlated with an easily obtained external body measurement[long dash]the distance between the upper border of the cricoid cartilage and the tip of the xiphoid process; the relation was found to be statistically significant. Two suggestions are given for selecting endotracheal tubes of maximum safe length in adults: Nasotracheal tube[long dash]use the distance measured along the body surface between the upper border of the cricoid cartilage and the tip of the xiphoid process. Orotracheal tube[long dash]subtract 2 cm. from this distance.
